If you are thinking of hiring a digital marketing consultant, this page is for you.
I have prepared this Digital Marketing Consultant Information Guide to help companies that are thinking about hiring a digital marketing consultant. Follow this guide to maximize value and learn what makes a digital marketing consultant worth their salt.
Everyday I get asked common questions from potential clients so I’m just going to answer those now and get them out of the way first thing.
The first and most common question that I get asked is, “Why Should I Hire a Digital Marketing Consultant?”
This is obviously a very important question but not one that is easy to answer.
Each and every client is different just like each and every digital marketing strategy is different and has different goals.
Many people wrongly assume that they can achieve success simply by throwing up a website and doing some social media posts online but before you fall into that trap think about this:
Do you know the most effective ways to get the right people looking at your page?
A website is a great start but it is only valuable if you have the means to drive traffic to it and convert that traffic into dollar bills.
What about customer acquisition costs – which social media outlets will provide a positive ROI?
Certainly you don’t want to waste your time (or more importantly – your money) developing a website that no one will visit or expending effort getting traffic that will never convert.
The Only Reason You Should Ever Hire a Digital Marketing Consultant is to Increase Your Customer Base, Revenue, and Profit.

Whenever I help a business with their online marketing the ultimate goal is to help that client grow their company.
I will be brutally honest with you! The only way that you’re going to be successful at marketing your company online is by laying out clearly defined goals and working diligently to use all of the digital marketing channels available to target the right people at the right time. Getting those people into a funnel that will eventually convert them into buyers so that you can achieve the goals that you set is vital!
The second most commonly asked question is, “How long will it take before I see results?”
Well that’s the million-dollar question!
First off, the number one thing that determines how long it will take to see profitable results from your digital marketing efforts is your product sales cycle.
If you sell a $5 impulse purchase gizmo online you will see conversions much quicker than if you sell commercial real estate which oftentimes takes months or even years to close a sale. However that’s just the beginning. Chances are that you will need to sell a whole bunch of $5 gizmos before you see any meaningful profit. On the flip side just one commercial real estate transaction could net you over $1,000,000.
Truth be told, it’s actually easier to get a positive return on your ad spend for a high dollar product with a long sales cycle – even though you may not see an immediate cash flow influx.
At it’s core, the main thing is to make sure that you are spending your online advertising dollars wisely. You absolutely must nurture the internet leads that your digital marketing efforts bring forth until they convert.
The Second Most Important Aspect of the Time it Takes to See a Positive ROI is Targeting.
An advertisement or piece of content is only as good as the audience that you target.
It is very important to make sure that you have a well thought out digital marketing strategy and a detailed plan that clearly defines target audiences before you even start to work on ad creatives.
One of the main factors that determines how well a campaign performs is wether or not the ad resonates with the target audience.
If you show the right ad to the right people you will see results!
Not sure who to target with what content?
Don’t worry! That’s why you hire me. Before I start any campaign I like to really get to know the ins and outs of a client’s business.
One other major factor that effects the amount of time it takes a client to see a positive return on their digital marketing efforts is testing.
I’ve been running digital advertising campaigns for a decade and I have never once had the very first ad that I ran be the best performing.
A good digital marketing consultant will tell you upfront that, “Like fine wine, great campaigns take time.” Even if the first ad that we run performs like Michael Jordan in his prime, we still should test other creatives and audiences because you never know when we might discover Lebron James.
Test, Test, and Then Test Some More.
When I set up an online advertising campaign for a client I want to A/B test all aspects of an ad. Did you know that, on Facebook for instance, simply adding an emoji to the text portion of an ad can increase CTR (click through rate) by 241%?
The third most common question that I hear is, “How much will it cost to run a successful digital marketing campaign?”
This, like the questions above is a little bit complicated to answer and can be a touchy subject for many people.
I hate to say it but the first thing I say to answer is, “Well, it Depends.”
And I know, I know, that’s not what you want to hear, but it’s the truth.
There are several things that we need to analyze and take into account before we can estimate what a successful online marketing campaign is going to cost.
Some of the things that we need to take into consideration are: Industry or vertical, ad platforms, lead nurturing, campaign goals, AOV (Average Order Value), sales cycle time, testing cost, competition, frequency of ads, and least of all my fees.
I know, that’s crazy right?!
You’re probably thinking, “So how am I supposed to estimate my budget?”
Well lets go ahead and break it down.
But before I spill the beans on digital marketing costs I need to explain that to give you an accurate estimate we really need to talk so that I can understand your company and your goals.

What vertical you are in is going to be one of the biggest factors in your digital marketing budget. CPC’s (cost per click) vary greatly from one industry to another depending on how competitive the market is. The other thing to think about is that some industries are more difficult to target. Think about it this way, if you’re selling a T-Shirt, pretty much every man, woman, and child on earth is a potential customer. But if you’re selling a specialized piece of machinery, we may really have to drill down to get your ad in front of the right target audience.
Digital Marketing is an all encompassing discipline. There is not a “one size fits all” for businesses that want to drive revenue and profit online. Contrary to popular belief there is no such thing as free digital marketing. You may have heard that social media or SEO doesn’t cost anything to implement and get a return. This couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, SEO is possibly the most expensive form of digital marketing. Some online advertising channels will be more effective than others depending on the product being marketed and the people being marketed to.
Digital Marketing Ad Platforms.
The most common digital marketing platforms are: (click for more info)
- Google Adwords (Now Google Ads)
- Google Display Network (Now Google Ads)
At the end of the day, a good digital marketing consultant will analyze your industry and business goals to come up with a plan that uses several or all of the above online ad platforms.
Typically speaking the two digital marketing platforms that are the most likely to show you an immediate return on your ad spend are Google Adwords and Facebook Ads.
The real key to winning at your digital marketing efforts is to come up with a strategy that uses certain platforms to locate initial leads and then implement other online ad channels to nurture those leads and push them down your marketing funnel until they eventually become paying customers.
The better your digital marketing funnel is, the lower your customer acquisition cost will be.
Having a killer lead funnel is all about nurturing your potential customer and guiding them down the pathway to becoming valuable paying clients.
Remember you really need to know who your customers are so that we can build a profile and put the right marketing in front of the right people.
Some customers will take longer to nurture than others. Sometimes you will show an ad to a potential customer and they will convert on the first click – but that’s the exception, not the rule.
Needless to say, the sooner a prospect converts, the less it will cost you in advertising.
The industry average conversion rate is only 2.35%.
That means that on average, only 2 out of every 100 people that click on your ad will spend money with you immediately.
I know that I’m getting repetitive here but the key is to take those other 98 people and put them into your lead funnel that will over time convert a much larger percentage of them into paying customers.
Here is a Digital Marketing Lead Funnel That You Can See to Get an Idea of What I am Talking About.
Give Me a Call!
I’m sure you have heard the old adage, “It takes money to make money.”
That age old saying still holds true when it comes to digital marketing.
One of the things that will cost you money right away is testing.
Without a doubt there is going to be a learning curve for your ads. Different ads convert at different rates for different people on different online advertising platforms.
The only way to make sure that you are acquiring customers at the lowest possible rate is to test, test, and test some more. This is just a cost of doing business and there is nothing you can do about it. The worst thing that you can do is to give up if you don’t see great results immediately. It takes time and money to find the perfect mix for your business.
How competitive is your industry. Some verticals are very developed and have a ton of competition out there vying for eyeballs. The plumbing business for example has some of the highest CPC rates around. On the other hand if you are a fiber optics supplier, there is almost no online competition.
The competition aspect of how much it costs to run a successful digital marketing campaign is actually really simple. The more competitive your industry, the more it will cost to show ads to your prospects.
All businesses are different. The amount of time that it takes for a customer to go from potential client to closed sale will drastically affect how much it will cost to run your digital ad campaign.
You may think that as soon as you are taking to a prospect that you should perhaps stop spending money advertising to that person.
Well, that’s the wrong attitude my friend!
How often do you think a prospect is only speaking to you and not considering and comparing you to your competitors?
Probably not often!
That’s just one reason why you should up your marketing efforts once you have a prospect in your funnel.
You want to make sure that when they think about your product or service that they can’t even remember your competitors name because they see your ads everywhere all the time.
I’m sure that you understand that the more often you show your online advertisements, the more it will cost. That’s pretty much a no-brainer!
This applies not only to how often one ad is show, but also to how many different ads are shown and on how many different platforms.
We need to work together to figure out the best mix of ads and online marketing channels to show to your target audience so that we can optimize your campaign for conversions.
There is no point in showing endless, repetitive ads to the same people if they never convert into paying customers.
I don’t want you to throw your money in the trash!
It’s my job to make sure that we are showing your ads the right amount of times to the right people on the right platforms so that we can meet your revenue and profit goals.
Remember, the key here is not to “save money” by showing the least expensive ads, it is to create a campaign that profitable and then spend as much money as possible to grow your business until you reach the point of diminishing returns.
Now For The Fun Part…
How much does it cost to pay me to be your Digital Marketing Consultant?
I saved this section for last because I figure that if you took the time to read all of the information above you are probably pretty serious about wanting to get your digital marketing strategy right.
To be brutally honest, if your just a tire kicker or not ready to get serious about winning the online marketing battle against your competitors, or if your just looking for the cheapest digital marketing consultant out there…
I’m probably not the right guy for you!
I can tell you right now that I’m not the cheapest digital marketing consultant around.
Do You Really Want to Hire the Cheapest Digital Marketing Consultant You Can Find?
If you had a heart problem and you were going out to interview heart surgeons what are you going to look for?
Do you want to hire the best possible surgeon or are you ok hiring the fly-by-night discount surgeon that also works delivering pizzas on the weekend?
What about this scenario. Lets say you were charged with a serious crime that you didn’t commit?
Do you think it would be wise to hire one of those late at night cheesy TV ad lawyers with a catchy slogan or would you rather hire Johnny Cochran?
While hiring an online marketing consultant isn’t nearly as dire as either of those situations it is something to be taken seriously. We may not be dealing with your health or your freedom but we are talking about something else very important… YOUR MONEY.
